Machine Shop Solutions

Problem: Traditional hardness testers are only designed to work with a tight range of sizes. Solution: A motorized design offers a versatile frame that is compatible with a larger range of workpiece options.Rockwell hardness testers are the most common types of hardness testers used in the U.S. In the Rockwell hardness tests, a conical diamond indentor with a 120° angle and a radius curvature of 0.2mm, or a carbide ball indenter ranging from 1/16" to 1/2" diameter, is pressed into the specimen. An initial (minor) load is applied, followed by the test force (major load) for the prescribed dwell time. The hardness number is determined by the difference of the indentation depth to the indenter between the initial (minor) and total test force (major load). The Rockwell hardness test uses an initial (minor) load of 10kgf and total test force (major load) of 60kgf, 100kgf and 150kgf. The Rockwell superficial hardness test uses a preliminary test force of 3kgf and total test force (major load) of 15kgf, 30kgf and 45kgf. The 30 Rockwell and Rockwell superficial scales are produced using these 6 (15/30/45/60/100/150kgf) total test forces and five indenter types to cover a wide variety of both hardness and material thickness.

Features

  • Motorized application of the total (Major) test force improves accuracy and repeatability and eliminates the problems of an oil dashpot controlled system.
  • The newly designed frame provides maximum clearance for positioning the workpiece.
  • Simple to operate.
  • Features an automatic preset function on the indicator to set the initial (Minor) test force to zero.
